The joy of capturing! Sometimes, when youre training with your dog, they will offer a brand new behavior. When your dog is very clicker savvy they might do it if theyre unsure what you expect or if youve jumped a bit too far ahead in criteria. Often, we just ignore these behaviors in favor of reevaluating our criteria or we just wait for the dog to offer the correct behavior. But sometimes, you hit behavior gold. Your dog may offer a behavior that you find cute or useful or both! When you use capturing, you can mark these new behaviors and put them on cue, adding them to your dogs vocabulary. In my case, Cinna and I were working on adding some distance to his wave cue in public when he started to offer this cute jumping behavior. I think he was probably frustrated because I got a little ambitious with the amount of distance I had added but instead of ignoring the behavior, I decided to capture it and put it on cue. Now we have a wave behavior AND a BIG wave behavior. I got a bit of the session on video below.
