The jurisprudence of animal protection laws started off with much derision. Sample this - In 1821 Richard Martin, M.P., proposed a law to prevent the ill-treatment of horses. the following account conveys the tone of the ensuring debate: ....when Alterman C. Smith suggested that protection should be given to asses, there were such howls of laughter that the Times reporter could hear little of what was said. When the Chairman repeated this proposal, the laughter was intensified. Another member said Martin would be legislating for dogs next, which caused a further roar of mirth and a cry and cats!! sent the House into convulsions. The circle was almost complete a mere 30 years later when in 1859 Darwin published his famous theory of Evolution stipulating that humans evolved from other supposedly lesser animals!!! And today the legal jurisprudence of animal protection laws is so strong that that first debate in the House of Commons seems almost unreal in its existence!!!!!
