The kaleidoscope of races, ethnicities & complexions you see -and the panoply of languages and accents one hears- in the metropoles of former empires is really stunning. Go on the Tube in London or the Metro in Paris and Lisbon (Istanbul too, to a lesser extent) or other forms of public transport and youll really get a sense of how expansive the colonial/imperial apparatuses were, not to mention, uber effective and wildly efficient.
