The kidnapping of hundreds of Nigerian schoolgirls is an outrage. This horrific episode is also an important reminder that women and girls remain desperately vulnerable in much of the world and that we must not assume that the gains made by women here and in Europe over the past three decades have resulted in similar improvements in the lives of women around the world. Denial of education, an absence of economic rights and a lack of reproductive autonomy are holding back billions of women and inhibiting progress and development.
