The kids and I listened to the YA book Ruby Red in the car yesterday. Its about a family in which some people can time travel; the main characters cousin is believed to be the one who will time travel, and her life is spent preparing for it. But it turns out to be the main character who, completely unprepared, is the gene carrier. The protagonist is so passive and dim-witted that she drove us nuts. At one point, the Lego Savant says, This really reminds me of Harry Potter. In what way? I said. He said, In that her best friend is a whole lot smarter than she is. I said, Youre right! Leslie is totally her Hermione. Id read Leslies book. The Lego Savant: Me, too. The sad thing is that the plot is compelling enough that Ill probably read the rest of the trilogy, rolling my eyes at the protagonist the whole time, just to find out what happens.
