The kids in The Chenies used to play this game outside during the 60’s. Some of you must have memories of playing it as well. I remember The Watering Can in particular but thankfully I dont think it was asked for too often! One of us would be ‘it’ and stand in the middle of the road whilst the others lined up a few yards further down on an imaginary ‘start line’. Whoever was ‘it’ would call out to the others, one at a time, asking them to do certain actions that would enable them to move up the road. The first to reach ‘it’ would be the winner and become ‘it’ for the next game. The commands used where Pigeon steps, Giant Steps, Bunny Hops, Cartwheels, Rolley Polley’s, Watering Cans and Lampposts. In case you were wondering what some of the more obscure were, for a Lamppost you would lie on the ground and reach your arms out as far as possible then stand on the spot where they reached and a Watering Can was where you would ‘spit’ and then stand on the spot where it reached!! More than one of each action could be asked for such as 3 bunny hops for example or a mixture of actions, such as 3 bunny hops and a lamppost and in addition ‘it’ could ask for reverse actions! Oh I nearly forgot, the most important point was that before carrying out a command for ‘it’ you had to remember to say ‘May I’ .If you didn’t you’d have to go back to the start! As you can appreciate, it often caused a few whinges and quarrels but generally whoever was ‘it’ tried to be as fair as possible.
