The killing of Eric Garner scares me each time I think of it, so I am proud of the demonstrators who are out there making our voices clear that our lives matter, that police cannot just grab a man and strangle him to death and walk free. Here is how close it is to me: I am always on Staten Island, at least twice a year because my younger sister and her family live there. Her husband, who has never committed a crime could have been Mr. Garner. Her step sons, young grown men, could have been Mr. Garner. Hundreds of other Liberians, many of them immigrants who moved to this country during the war, many hard working fathers and grown sons could have been one of them, strangled by those police officers. Thank you, America, for marching in the cold across cities to stand up for Michael Brown, for Eric Garner, for Trayvon Martin, for all the unknown young black men brutally murdered at the hands of bad police officers who were supposed to protect them.
