The ladder metaphor..so appropriate. Ronald did a compelling series of ladder sculptures in the 70s and 80s, I remember one in particular, It was a piece called seven windows to a sky on fire, a wooden ladder hed built staked into the ground out west, may have been the California coast, it was burning against a dusk sky. Fantastic work. I wound up in a sculpture seminar, held in his chairs office, 86 I think. Maybe 6-7 of us. He absolutely smoked me... every time, with the most elegantly oblique and circuitous refractions of the world around us.... sweet jesus I was rapt and just hung on by my fingernails; my first Rilke, Castaneda, XTC, and the cigars, field trips in the Citroen, his slowly peeling and chewing the pith of orange peels, tossing his head back laugh with the fine gap between his teeth... oh, and his crazy ass groovy fluid dancing... We eventually figured out that he was doing a sculpture installation in Kaiser Hospital Oakland at the time I was born there, swear Im still deciphering the rhetorical knots he wound decades ago... What a pleasure remembering him. If anyone can post work of his Id love to see it. Rest in Peace Ronald.
