The landowner said to the laborers, “Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ So the last will be first, and the first will be last.” Matthew 20:15-16 Surely one of the most puzzling of Jesus’ parables, the story of the landowner who pays every worker the same regardless of the amount of work done has caused reams of commentary. Leaving aside the nuances of the parable, the moral Jesus had in mind is clearly given: Don’t take being first too seriously. Except, however, being first in generosity, in caring, in love of our neighbor... these we should take very seriously!
