The last circus (2010) IMDB Rating: 6.5 out of 10 Dir: Alex De Enrique Iglesias The last circus is a dark and twisted tale of two clowns fighting for the love of a beautiful yet manipulative circus contortionist who seems to take enjoyment in the attention and drama using jealousy against men brings until things get grim and she gets far more than she bargains for. The main story centers around the Happy and sad clowns and their battle to win the affections of Natalia. however the film opens with a flashback to what appears to be World War 2 where we meet Javier, A young boy whos father , A happy clown in the circus is recruited to go into battle and turns out to be a valuable asset to the rebel army until he is captured and taken prisoner . Through the years he is tortured and held captive while Javier grows older still holding onto dreams of following the family tradition of clowning. While being forced to watch his father get executed, Javiers father tells his son that he may not grow up to be the happy clown and must perform as a Sad clown until he is able to avenge the death of his Papa, Only then can he dawn the families smile. Flash forward 20 or so years and we see a much older , chubbier and shy Javi as he enters the big circus as said Sad Clown. working alongside Sergio the twisted and despicable Happy Clown. Sergio , The happy clown and star performer of the circus is a violent and dangerous man who dates Natalia the contortionist/ribbon worker/dancer mentioned above. From the gate we see their relationship is rigid and he is extremely abusive towards his gorgeous companion. At first things seem to be going on without a hitch as the duo work wonderfully together and their act is a big hit. Things begin to unravel rapidly however when Javier falls for the dancer and she leads him on , for the sole purpose of using him to make her abusive lover jealous. After watching Natalia get beaten on several occasions , Javier attempts to take her from Sergio and this leads to Sergio finding them together and Javier nearly begin killed at the hands of his clown counterpart. Here begins the story of revenge as once escaping from the hospital Javier violently attacks Sergio leaving him near death and horribly disfigured. This kickstarts a brutal back and forth battle and things really hit the fan. Without giving too much away Javier eventually loses his mind disfiguring his own face to look like a clowns paint (using acid a iron and other ghastly tools) and sets out on a blood soaked path of revenge that becomes more about him being feared, and deadly completely losing the point he initially had and he becomes just as awful as the man he despises. As the story progresses and the body count rises we realize that pretty much everyone in the film is only out for selfish gain and they all are downright disgusting people in general. All of this development to the characters and their personalities leads to a huge final showdown with grim results. The film is paced well and watching the cast become these awful creatures makes for a incredible watch. The cinematography and circus as a backdrop make for some truly stunning and often creepy visuals. However this film is certainly not a happy one as it can only be summed up or categorized as a tragedy film. A real downer of a film that dives into the psyche of how greedy and self centered we all can be when pushed to our outer limits. The film despite being a story that has been told a million times takes a much darker approach , Also keeping in mind that it has elements of horror, drama, comedy as well as over the top action and gore makes this film really one of a kind. Not an easy task as I said given the story is as old as they come (The scorned lovers quarrel). Definitely worth a watch for those looking for something out of the norm but again keep in mind that this is not one to watch when your feeling down because this film will most certainly not lift your spirits. It is in Spanish with English subs for those of you out there who are not into foreign films but if you can get past that, which I would hope most of the readers here could, I dont think this film will disappoint many as it has a little bit of something for everyone. If youre home and looking for something unique and far out then give this one a shot , you can catch it on Netflix so nothing lost if its not up to your speed.
