The last few years have seen a disturbing increase in the open expression of divisive racism and fear-mongering. The Liberal Party and established media have been encouraging this and have been using it to shift blame for economic mismanagement and repressive policies onto an external “threat.” The apparent lack of resistence in the media has emboldened some who seek to organise racist and fascist groups within our communities in the style of the Golden Dawn and the EDL(English Defence League), who after their formation have been responsible for racially motivated attacks and furthering the division of societies already under stress. These fascist groups primarily direct their hatred towards Muslims, a cursory glance at their facebook pages will show you this, and in other countries it has led to the burning of homes, “invasions” of mosques, and physical attacks on individuals – usually those weakest or vulnerable. The pattern has been the same almost universally: these groups start by attacking Muslims, Vietnamese, Greeks and Italians or the Irish then anyone who isnt “Aussie” enough: Leftist, Trade Unionists, Queers and anyone who displays any difference. This trend needs to be met with all the force of combined ethical and community-oriented behaviour we can muster.
