The last installment of the Hobbit films opens later today, and sweeps away a chapter of my life that has been bittersweet. Close friends and acquaintances will be familiar with my abysmal creativity. The lone memory I have of pure creativity occurred when my mother would read J.R.R. Tolkiens The Lord of the Rings to my brothers and I at bedtime. I can still remember with vivid detail the various landscapes and buildings I constructed in my mind. For once in my life, I had an original masterpiece. Or so I thought. Peter Jackson ushered in the Lord of the Rings trilogy to a uncertain crowd. The movies proved successful in the box office, and even more so for myself. Jackson captured the beauty of Tolkiens creation and inspired new generations to fall in love with Middle-Earth. From my familys standpoint, the Hobbit films could not be better. My mothers birthday has fallen on the same week of the Hobbit movies are released. Such a coincidence has resulted in a few years of fantastic birthday celebrations... I could not imagine a more fitting tribute for her birthday than for the very books she read to us as a children to arrive on her birthday week. What Tolkien once wrote as a bedtime story for his own children has turned into one of the centurys most beloved tales. I owe Professor Tolkien a debt of gratitude, for it was Tolkien who cultivated a love of nature, an interest in medieval history, and admiration for literature in myself. I am sad to see Middle-Earth leave the big screen, but I am thankful that one of the greatest defining aspect of my life has become such a tremendous project in literature, film, history, philosophy, etc. As I sit down later today to watch 9 hour of The Hobbit, I will be thinking heavily of the Professors work and contribution to my life. For a man who passed away over a decade before my birth, I sure owe him a lot. I cannot wait to see how Peter Jackson will end the Middle-Earth adventure back in The Shire. But the road goes ever on...
