The last several weeks have brought terrible news for wolves. Despite wolves barely having recovered in most places where they live, several states are taking drastic and never-before-seen moves to kill them. In Idaho, the Governor had previously signed a law creating a Wolf Control Board to exterminate wolves as fast as they can. Now, an Idaho-based hunting group has sought permission from the Obama administration to hold yearly wolf killing derbies on millions of acres of federal land. In Washington, the state natural resources agency ignored non-lethal options and has begun killing most members of the Huckleberry Pack. Already, a member of that pack has been gunned down from a helicopter. In Wisconsin, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) plans to reduce wolves to 350 despite their own survey that found the majority of residents do not want to see the wolf population reduced. In addition, most biologists believe the states habitat can support more than 1,000 wolves---nearly 3 times DNRs goal! In Michigan, the legislature voted this week to pass a law that was designed to thwart the will of voters by circumventing a pair of ballot initiatives that would have allowed voters to determine whether to permit the hunting and trapping of gray wolves.
