The last time Myanmar conducted a census was in 1983. Large areas of the country—once called Burma in the West—were embroiled in civil war and unreachable. The new national census, which launches on March 30, is dearly needed, and also risky. It gives numeric codes to 135 ethnicities—yet there’s no code for the Rohingya, a Muslim minority in western Rakhine state. Kyaw Min, founder of the Democracy and Human Rights Party, defends the right of people to classify their own ethnic identity—including Rohingya such as himself. We should define who we are, not the government.
