The late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, had a closed-door meeting with his wives and three children hours before his death, Sunday Trust has gathered from reliable palace sources. Our sources told our correspondent that the emir met with his family on Wednesday where he urged them to be united. The monarch left behind 62 children, comprising 32 females and 30 males. “He met with three of our elder brothers and our mothers on Wednesday and it was during the meeting that he told them that if he dies, Sheik Nasir and one of our seniors should perform funeral bath on his remains in accordance with Islamic injunctions ,” one of his sons said. It was exclusively gathered that the emir was full of life during the meeting, as his voice was very sharp, unlike months ago when his health condition deteriorated. Palace sources told our correspondent that when the Bayero returned from a medical trip on May 19, his health condition improved to the admiration of all in the palace. It was gathered that his condition worsened hours after the turbanning of his friend, Sheikh Mohammad Nasir as Wazirin Kano. The royal father had preached peace at the event penultimate week. The function was the last ceremony and outing by the emir in the palace. Sunday Trust was told that the late monarch drank pap about two hours before his death. “He observed his dawn prayers in his room and after it he drank pap around 6am, as usual. It was shortly afterwards that his condition became unstable, thus he started praying. He was heard saying Kalimatul Shahadah. He was confirmed dead around 7.30am,” one of his children said. Who succeeds Bayero? As the processes for selecting a new emir began in Kano, qualified candidates from the respective ruling houses in the emirate have begun scheming for the highly reverred position. The Kano traditional institution provides for the appointment of a new emir within three days, subject to a recommendation by the emirate’s kingmakers. The kingmakers will deliberate and forward the names of three candidates to the state government, from which one of the nominees will be announced as the new emir. Sunday Trust profiles some of the leading contenders to the stool from whom the new Emir of Kano may emerge. Alhaji Tijjani Hashim is the Galadiman Kano and the most senior prince in the Kano Emirate. He is by birth an heir to the throne of the Emir of Kano, because his grandfather Emir Abbas had ruled Kano from 1903 to 1919. This is even as his father, Turaki Hashim, did not ascend the seat. Tijjani Hashim was a regional minister under the late Premier Ahmadu Bello the Sardauna of Sokoto and was very close to Sardauna. He has been a very influential person within and outside the Kano Emirate Council for decades. He is known to have strong connections with successive Nigerian rulers, among them former military President, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and Vice President Namadi Sambo. Tijjani Hashim, who is popularly referred to as Galadima, is known to be interested in the throne of the Emir of Kano. He, however, is in the same age-bracket as the late Emir Ado Bayero. Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, popularly known as Wambai, presently holds the title of Wamban Kano and is the most Senior Councillor in the Kano State Emirate Council. Wambai’s father, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi, was the 11th Emir of Kano under the Fulani dynasty. He reigned between 1954 and 1963. Abbas Sanusi is incharge of administrative matters at the council and he oversees the affairs of the emirate whenever the emir is away. The prince got his first appointment as a traditional ruler during the time of his father, Emir Sanusi, when he was Madawakin Tsakargida. From that position, he was promoted to Dan Iya and then Wambai. Wambai has been a traditional ruler even before the crowning of the late Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano. But like the Galadiman Kano, Abbas Sanusi is also said to be in the same age group as the late monarch. Palace watchers said the senior councillor maintains a cordial relationship with the present governor of Kano State, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso. He was also said to be very influential under the regime of General Sani Abacha, as he was said to be close to the then military ruler. Palace watchers said he has maintained an unwavering interest for the throne for years. Alhaji Sanusi Ado Bayero is the eldest son of the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero. Sanusi holds the title of Ciroman Kano and he is the district head of Gwale Local Government area. He was first given the traditional title of Dan Ruwata, and then elevated to Sarkin Dawakin Tsakargida by his father. He was later elevated to the position of Ciroma, which had been vacant for a while. The prince has had a stint in the civil service, where he rose to the position of a director general under the military. Sanusi is seen as one of the very close confidants of the late Bayero, and was always by the emir’s side whenever the monarch was attending either a private or public function within or outside the country. Ciroma was among the people that sustained injuries when Ado Bayero was attacked by suspected Boko Haram members in January 2013. Similarly, the prince was always on the emir’s entourage during his foreign medical trips. Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero is the second son of the late emir. He is a pilot by training. Before taking up a traditional title under his father, Aminu had worked with Kabo Air. He was first appointed Dan Buram and later, Turakin Kano. Presently, he is holding the title of Sarkin Dawakin Tsakargida and district head of Dala. Aminu was regarded as one of the late emir’s children that enjoyed recognition and confidence of the royal father, as he was constantly dispatched to represent the monarch at various occasions. Observers said his supporters have always cheered him as Bayero’s successor. Alhaji Nasiru Ado Bayero is a successful businessman with interests in power and oil sectors. He is the third son of the late Ado Bayero. Nasiru read Mass Communication at the University of Maiduguri and was born in the year his father ascended the throne of Kano - 1963. The prince was equally one of the confidantes of the emir, who accompanied him on local and foreign trips. He is said to be popular among people in the state and members of other ethnic groups across the country. He is described as level-headed and close to the masses. His supporters said his cosmopolitan nature, humility, compassion, kindness and generosity are qualities a new Emir of Kano should possess to move the kingdom forward from where Bayero had stopped. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi is a banker and scion of the Kano ruling class. Sanusi is the grandson of Emir Muhammdu Sanusi. After holding various positions in the banking sector, Sanusi was appointed the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in 2009, a position he held until he was removed under controversial circumstances by President Goodluck Jonathan early this year. Sanusi’s father, Alhaji Aminu Sanusi, never ascended the throne - he died occupying the office of Ciroman Kano. Sanusi was appointed Dan Majen by the late Emir Ado Bayero in 2012. Sanusi is rumoured as the favourite candidate of the Kano State government for the post. He is tipped as one of the strongest contenders to the throne, whose popularity enjoyed a boost among the people in the state during his tenure at the CBN. Dark Horse There is the possibility that the prince that may emerge as the new ruler of Kano could be relatively unknown and one who has not shown any interest for the crown. People who believe that a dark horse could emerge as the emir cited the selection of Ado Bayero in 1963 as the new emir of Kano after the short reign of Muhammadu Inuwa. According to them, Bayero was neither one of the frontline contenders to succeed his uncle nor was he in the country when his name was announced as the successor. The late Ado Bayero himself left behind over 60 children, many of them grown-up males that are qualified to rule. Similarly, there are other ruling houses whose members are not holding any key traditional titles, but yet have the right to rule. However, observers said until the name of a new emir is made public, all calculations as to who will become king remain in the realm of speculations. YA ALLAH MUNA ROKONKA KA JIKAN MARIGAYI ALHAJI ADO BAYERO.
