The lateral reaching lunge; a great multiplanar exercise for the hips Juan Carlos Santana: When you look at the function of the hips along with their supporting structures, there are few exercises deadbeat the lateral reaching lunge. The hips work with the lower back and hamstrings to allow the body to simultaneously move in three planes of motion. Primarily speaking the hips flex and extend into sagittal plane, ADduct and Abduct in the frontal plane, and internally and externally rotate in the transverse plane. This triplanar movement is supported by the lumbar spine and hamstrings. The lateral reaching lunge is a perfect exercise to simultaneously work the lumbar spine, the hips, and the hamstrings (i.e. the three amigos) in all three planes of motion.
