The latest VICE news coverage of the Russia-Ukraine war supports what many have known for a long, long time in Ukraine. Russia is allowing for people in military fatigues to cross its side of the border freely, and is even tending the wounded paramilitary forces from the Ukrainian separatist forces (which is a mix of Russian forces and some locals who genuinely believe the democratic Maidan is a fascist junta looking to ethnically cleanse Russians/Russian speakers). While a local insurgency against Kyiv may have been possible for a limited time in Ukraines south-east, without Russian support a long-term stand off would not be possible.
