The latest effort by Preston and Childs in their Agent Pendergast series is called White Fire and has a strong Sherlockian connection. The solution to a series of grizzly crimes occurring in an ultra-rich mountain resort community depends on events that took place in Victorian England and a meeting between Doyle and Oscar Wild at a London restaurant. This meeting actually took place and is mentioned by Doyle in his letters. According to this novel, Wild tells Doyle a story he heard while on his American tour- a story so shocking it causes a sort of spiritual crisis in Doyle. Being a writer, Doyle attempts to exorcise the horror by writing two stories, one a Sherlock Holmes story he did not think could ever be published, and a milder more fictionalized story, The Hound of the Baskervilles. The solution of the crime depends on finding the lost story and following the clues hidden in the Hound.
