The launch of the MK2 in Europe at the Frankfurt Motor Show september 1983 was a new era for the Golf. A larger wheelbase (+75mm), new dimensions (larger bodyshell) and a some more weight, but also a renewed styling by the Wolfsburg design department. The original designer of the MK1, Giugiaros ItalDesign, also proposed a design, but the final choice was the study from in-house VW design director Schäfer. Within the first year of production they already made some slightly changes to the body as the lower rear part, but the main exterior design stayed for many years.
