★ The laws of karma The laws of karma can very briefly be defined by a saying – As you sow, so you shall reap. The quality of energy that we give out is what we receive. When we give happiness to other, we receive happiness and we get pain and sorrow for causing the same to others. It may not be as impactful as our doing because like all parents, god always reduces the amount of pain his children have to bear. He has given us birth in this body to settle our karma that we may have created during our past births. A holy man was sitting with his disciples as he preached them. His wife, who was cleaning the house, came out with a dust pan full of garbage and emptied it on her husband’s head. The holy man without uttering a word went inside changed his clothes, washed himself and came back to his disciples and continued his preaching. He showed no sign of anger. After sometime, his wife came out of the house, this time with a bucket of dirty water and poured it all on her husband. The disciples were shocked to see this, but same as last time, guru ji went inside cleaned himself up and came back to continue. One of his disciple interrupted and asked, “Why is wife behaving like this and why aren’t you saying anything to her” to which the guru replied, “this is law of karma” he continued, “actually in my previous birth, I was a crow and she was a cow. I used to sit on her back and poke my beak into her wounds causing her immense pain. So what she’s doing to me now is nothing compared to the pain I’ve caused to her. Besides she is helping me clear up my negative karmas of the past.” It is our belief system that we are responsible for only some of our actions but not all of them. We feel responsible for actions that directly impact growth, happiness, positivity but would reject the ones causing pain. For example, we associate ourselves with actions that result in betterment of friends, family and coworkers but when the result is below our expectations, we blame others for not putting in as much effort or we blame the system which doesn’t allow better performance. It is through spirituality that we understand the law of cause and effect and we learn to take responsibility of all our actions. When we look at our life’s events without being biased or judgmental, we will begin to see the relationship between cause and effect. We’ll get a sense of understanding how our actions have defined the result we are seeing. And when we see and believe that all of our actions result in an impact and have an effect on us, we understand that the spiritual law of karma is applicable to us also.
