The learned amongst my readers, will, no doubt, realise that today is the 50th Anniversary of Winston Churchills death. Like him, or loath him, he rightfully earned a place in our history, from his early carreer attempting to reach the white Russians, to help rescue the Russian Royal Family, a failure, alas, through the occassional forarys of the First world War, and into his greatest moment of leading us against Nazi-ism. I, personally, think he had a lot to answer for, including ordering the Police to shoot to kill, the striking miners, in the 1926 seige of Sydney Street, the the ordering of bombing of civilian areas of German cities, to break their spirit, (it didnt). during early days of the war, which resulted in Hitler announcing Total War. Then he gave the famous we will fight them in the fields, we will fight them in the hills speech, but buggered off to America to be nice & safe. He was old school Tory toff. Demanded the Colossus computer at Bletchley Park be destroyed and remains scattered, so its technology would not get into the hands of commoners. He hated tv, thought it should have the plug pulled, thought the burgeoning NHS an abomination. That it would lead to the ruination of Doctors. You had to pay in the pre-NHS days. No, as you might have gathered, I am not a fan.But if he hadnt have stepped up to the mark, who else did we have.
