The leaves are too wet to do anything with which gave me the opportunity to be Davy domestic. Because it wasnt raining our neighborhood loggers were at it full steam all day. They have been approaching our property line for a couple of days. I can easily tell theyre getting closer because the sound of their heavy machinery is getting louder. About mid afternoon I asked Wilson if he would like to go out, and we walked on the ridge overlooking the area thats being logged. I knew they were close, and all of a sudden I saw a bulldozer crashing through the trees. He was working the hillside directly across from me, close enough I could almost see the whites of his eyes. Im not sure if he saw me, but in time they will realize Im out there every day tracking their activities. I tried making some video with my phone, but the auto focus was confused by all of the trees and I couldnt get a shot of the dozer while it was working. Fine. So Wilson and I went to the shop to find my old digital camera. It took a little doing but eventually I found it hiding under one of my piles. It was then I discovered the batteries were drained and I could open the camera, but it wouldnt take a photo. Today I have fresh batteries and Ill see if we can capture some images. I really want to shoot some video, I think a clean view of the proceedings will tell the story in the most graphic way possible. Its absolutely delicious that I can lawfully get around the IDNRs capricious ban on any one observing logging activities. I suspect if were effective, there will be laws passed similar to the agg-gag laws designed to protect animal cruelty in the name of free enterprise. But for now the door is wide open, and Im stuffing my foot all in it. I watched this fellow for a long time, and I couldnt quite tell what his objectives were. It seemed from my vantage point he was randomly shoving smaller trees to the ground and carving up the hillside. I assume hes constructing one of the thirty foot wide, heavily graveled roads that will permanently change the character of the forest. I hope some of you got to hear episode 32 of The Brown County Hour last night. I think its one of our better shows, but what I would like to share is the interview with the executive director of The Indiana Forest Alliance, Jeffery Stant. He succinctly and graphically describes the IDNRs new forest plan and what the consequences will be to almost all of our state forest. He also describes the IFAs Wild Indiana plan and how we might support it. The IDNR has received a copy of the plan and they responded by offering some of the proposed set aside area in the Low Gap Back Country for timber sale. Their plan is to log these areas as fast as they can, and by so doing, remove any contention along with the forest. In other words if the forest is gone the effort to save it will go away. Theyre wrong about this, were not going away, were growing in numbers. When these images reach the media, social and otherwise, people will be outraged. And, I cant tell you how happy I am to do my part.
