The lesson you take from H.P. Lovecraft is that evil exists, it is out there, unseen, occasionally rumbling underfoot, but it is above all a force that permeates the air and which runs deep in the earth. Lovecrafts one mistake was to assign this evil to black people and to the immigrant invasion of his beloved American shores, which was mostly Rhode Island. I think evil is the other thing, it lurks in the underground catacombs built by an ancient evil, maybe the First Evil, on which the current IPOs of Silicon Valley sit. Its there, Lovecrafts Cthulu, sitting still but humming ever so slightly, like a Toyota Hybrid.
