The life of a Type 1 Diabetic: for the past 3 days Ive been - TopicsExpress

The life of a Type 1 Diabetic: for the past 3 days Ive been feeling pretty crummy and battling an infection. As you can see in the first photo, my blood sugars have been running pretty high (yellow on the graph). Prolonged periods of hyperglycemia (high blood sugars) causes permanent damage to vital organs and can lead to nerve damage (neuropathy, oftentimes leading to amputation), diabetic retinopathy (hemorrhaging in the eyes that causes blindness), heart disease, kidney failure, and even coma. We T1s strive to maintain a healthy glucose level (white on the graph) which takes a heck of a lot of planning, calculating, and, because diabetes is unpredictable, many times it takes pure guesswork. Today, Im starting to finally feel better, which leads to more stable blood sugar levels as seen in the second photo. My target blood sugar range is 90-110 on a good day...when battling common illnesses, I work hard to keep my levels under 140. Anything higher than 160 affects my emotions, energy level, and ability to think clearly. Today, I kicked diabetes A$$! It may seem like a minor thing, but when you deal with T1D everyday of your life, you learn to celebrate the small victories! #weneedacure
