The lineman was climbing down after the final check, from the last - TopicsExpress

The lineman was climbing down after the final check, from the last of the newly erected electric poles that were carrying the distribution lines and the step-down transformers, as the whole village was standing there with bated breath. This was the most special day for them after each of those few hundred homes in that nondescript village in the foothills on one of the most difficult and inaccessible terrains, had got one electric bulb and a meter for some weeks now and was waiting for the final miracle to happen. After the linemen gave all ok signal, the engineer in the sub-station waited for the muharat and then switched the power on. Far away in the tortuous hilly road, a bus was going through the labour to negotiate a hairpin bend and the passengers inside saw in the valley something unique for the first time. As the dusk was fast approaching, it appeared as though hundreds of fireflies had suddenly descended there, as the houses were all lit up. Close by, the faces of those villagers were equally lit up with joy, as for the first time they experienced a true Diwali - an array of lights! Kishore Trivia : Even now, one-third of rural India, 6% of urban India and about 300 million Indian citizens have no access to electricity. Even those who are lucky to have suffer due to the frequent power outages and poor quality of supply. A few units of power conserved by those who are lucky to afford power, would help light a poor mans home.
