The lobbying around Europe’s data protection overhaul has intensified again, as Jan Phillip Albrecht, the MEP charged with steering it through Parliament confirms that a critical vote in the civil liberties committee will not now take place until September at the earliest. There has been a huge amount of lobbying from industry and civil liberties groups. But it is becoming increasingly difficult to tell one from the other. Following a complaint, the European Privacy Association (EPA), a name that would lead one to think it is an organisation in favour of strong privacy laws, has been forced to admit that Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo are its corporate backers, The Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO) had complained that EPA had not disclosed its industry backers in the the EU’s lobby transparency register, in violation of the rules of the transparency register.
