The local Atlanta newscasts remain a source of entertainment for this New England transplant. Much of the country is dealing with below-average temperatures thanks to some cold air from the north, but to watch the local news, youd think that Atlanta was facing the apocalypse. Yes, it was cold here this morning, but morning temperatures in the high 20s en route to a daytime high near 50 does not, in fact, constitute an Arctic blast as the local weatherpeople keep breathlessly insisitng; thats basically normal November weather in Boston. And yet the Atlanta stations are covering this story breathlessly, as though the fact that they couldnt leave the house without a coat for one day somehow is on a par with a plague of locusts and frogs raining from the heavens. For future reference, Atlanta, up in New England we would use the adjective Arctic to describe those days when the temperature didnt make it out of the single digitis all day. And Im sure our friends in the north central plains states think that we were spoiled because our temperature got above zero. A day when your temperature high point is almost twenty degrees above the freezing mark is going to earn you no sympathy. So bundle up, grumble quietly and enjoy the fact that this will be over literally tomorrow.
