The long-anticipated documentary on the life of J. D. Salinger has just opened to mixed reviews. Salinger, who died in 2010, was of course best known for "The Catcher in the Rye," a ubiquitous presence on high school reading lists. Perhaps more noteworthy, though, is "Nine Stories," a simple yet memorable collection of his short fiction that included "For Esme with Love and Squalor" and "A Perfect Day for Bananafish." The film also features Rochester native and Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman as one of several "talking-head" interviews.
