The main difference between jerks and abusers is the idealizing & grooming phase. Most of us have no problem spotting nasty people – we avoid them. But narcissists present themselves as your mirror image. A soul mate. They quickly declare that no one has ever made them so happy in their life – they compare you to past exes, holding you high above everyone else. They sniff out your vulnerabilities, insecurities, and dreams. And based on their findings, they transform their entire personalities to become your perfect match. Once you have fallen in love, the mask begins to slip. This is not someone who simply lost interest because you fell in love with them (that’s another kind of jerk). No, narcissists will continue the facade and toss back remnants of the idealizing phase, if they ever feel that they’re losing power. They manipulate you with past hopes, giving you a glimmer of light to hang onto. But ultimately, they will abandon you in the cruelest way imaginable, full of contempt and hatred that you will not even be able to comprehend at the time.
