The main issue with saying that ‘freedom isn’t free,’ spans beyond just the linguistics of the phrase. It has so been promulgated that its underpinning idea – that human liberty is something gained from fighting wars – has become virtually idiomatic in modern American culture. The problem is multifold. It demands, worst of all, that the lives of hundreds of human beings, almost certainly by the scarification of their liberty, must have their lives taken from them for the benefit of others, namely those who do not fight the war. The true underlying message promoted is that liberty is not innate to human beings or their nations, and that it is conditional upon a commitment to bloodshed and militarization. While, unfortunately, this has historically been the case, it is an incredibly irresponsible tradition to maintain. The presupposition that culture will never progress to the point where human rights are no longer a standard which must be regulated is one which denies many of the tenants that its dogmatic owners hold dear. We should strive to reach that moment wherein, indeed, freedom is not free, because it needs not be anything but itself: a natural right of man separated neither by nation nor constitution.
