The maintenance staff at Ozark National Scenic Riverways has to be skilled in the crafts of the past as well as the present because they work on structures built before The Civil War as well as ones built in this decade? They also build new structures. The photos show the restoration of Maggard Cabin just downstream and across from Welch Spring on the upper Current River. The work was done in 2002 and required the expertise of an historic carpenter. The first photo shows the way the floor joists were mortised into the sills. The second photo shows Doug Conway, a trained historic carpenter, using a foot adze to cut the tops of the floor joists to make them perfectly level. In the third photo you can see the pine plank floor installed on the joists and a member of the crew working on the stringers or ceiling joists. There are great opportunities for young people to receive training to become an historic carpenter with The National Park Service. If a young man or woman likes history and historic structures, this would be a great career for them.
