The make-up of pop bands/groups/duos in 2014 is very different to how I remember them growing up. We are living in the age of the producer/dj where record labels have recognised the marketability of the guys and girls shaping the sound of artists from often dark and dingy recording studios long before a music video has even been thought about. So is it a clever marketing ploy from the labels, a move from producers to step into the limelight or maybe a sincere recognition of the work producers do from the majors....Ok maybe not the third option. Whatever the motivation to this trend, its making the charts look and sound a bit more interesting. Jillian Hervey and producer Lucas Goodman of NYC duo Lion Babe are the latest singer/producer duo to make an assault on the international music charts with their brand of poppy, soul influenced, RnB. Goodman s production contains all the groove and cool samples expected of respected Hip Hop producers yet retains an accessable quality necessary to garner success on radio and the charts. And in Hervey (who incedently is the daughter of Vanessa Williams of Ugly Betty fame) they have a front woman capable of reaching the higher echilons of the pop stratosphere. She has the look, the moves and a distinctive voice, that trifecta of pop power that arguably some of the most succesful ladies in pop cant ever hope to boast. Since the release of 2013s brilliant Treat me like fire, the hype machine has been in motion and Lion Babe have returned with a triumphant roar, firstly last month with the sassy Jump Hi and now with a smouldering slow jam entitled Jungle Lady. Take a listen below and see why I think the likes of Rihanna and Rita Ora should be watching their backs.
