The mask is the perfect deception to hide behind to keep the world from knowing who it really is behind that perfect smile, the controlled expression and the perfectly contained emotion. Yes, the mask is an excellent deceiver that insures that no one can see in to discover the true person hiding beneath – the person with problems, fears and failings. Therefore, more often than we would like to admit, many of us can be found wearing such a device around those we know, respect and love. Why are we so afraid to let others see who we really are? I would wager, if my own fears are any indication, that we are often afraid to be open with others because we are worried about what they will think or say. But that’s the funny part of the whole thing because the people we wear our masks for, the people we are frightened to be real with, are all probably wearing masks themselves.
