The median wealth for an African American household, according to a 2010 survey, is $4,900; for whites, it is $97,000. The $92,100 gap is an outcome of the continued structural racism and embedded economic discrimination that we have in the society. Thus, we celebrate MLK by committing ourselves to justice, fairness, equality but more importantly to demonstrate courage as we speak Truth to Power. This is the only way I can see fit to celebrate MLKs birthday and working to make a different world possible! I end with the South African leader Steven Bikos words: The most dangerous weapon in the hands of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. I add by saying: The most powerful weapon in the fight for freedom is the liberated and de-colonized mind of the oppressed.
