The memory foam camping pillow. Have I piqued your interest? I think you are all familiar with memory foam, right? Maybe some of you already have them at home? Quite simply, it is a polyurethane open-cell foam that reacts to heat and conforms to its shape. It was adapted mainly for use as a mattress, as it provides a tailored fit to your body, providing the ultimate support and comfort. It was the latest and greatest thing at the time. Subsequently, this technology was adapted for a variety of other uses, one of which was the small compact camping pillow I found one day. To say the least, I was quite impressed. How often do you see technological advances in pillows, let alone a camping pillow? I honestly thought this was going to be the be all, and end all, of pillows. I was so excited, I purchased two for my next trip. The pillow is actually cut to form, to provide optimal support for your head and neck, as it has a wave design which cups your head in the trough, with the peak part of the wave being different heights to provide varying support. The pillow is small and fairly compact when rolled up, but not really that light in weight. It also has a nice soft fleece cover which you can easily remove and wash. Now for the most important part, how did it work? Well, lets just say it isnt the perfect pillow, for a few reasons. First off, yes, the pillow is soft, very supportive and comfortable, but with a big caveat, all related to temperature. In the summer, when it is very warm, the foam gets soft, and combined with your warm head, the foam then becomes mushy. It loses some its support. When it get cooler, then the support returns and you have the ideal pillow. However, when it gets colder, you have problems. Mainly because, when you take it out of the stuff sack, it doesnt unroll. Yup, you have this hard mass of rolled foam. We were surprised to say the least. We worked around it by putting it in our jackets to thaw out and unroll, but it essentially loses the softness immediately back in the cold. Imagine sleeping on a soft block of ice? Then of course when you get up from sleeping, you have to re-thaw it out to roll it back up. Yup, shes temperamental alright. Unless under the ideal temperature range, (meaning at home), you will have to deal with her changing moods. Have you ever had a partner that provides unreliable support when conditions change?? (JOKING! Dont answer that!) You get the idea. The search for the perfect pillow continued. The next pillow seems to be the crowd favourite. The Thermarest pillow. Advantages of a memory foam camping pillow Soft and supportive (under ideal temperatures) Compact Easy to clean outer cover Disadvantages of a memory foam camping pillow Affected by temperature Not very light
