He worked as a waiter for many years, in whites-only resorts and country clubs. In 1952, he started work in the White House as a pantry man, a job which involved basic tasks such as dish washing, stocking and cleaning silverware. Over the years Eugene rose in his position, becoming the butler to the President. In 1981, Eugene finally attained the most prestigious rank of butlers serving in the White House, Maître dhôtel, during the presidency of Ronald Reagan. Ronald and Nancy Reagan helped Eugene make history when he was the first White House butler to be invited as a guest at a formal state banquet. Co-worker Wilson Jerman said of Eugene: He was such a professional in everything he did. Eugene retired in 1986. He was a quiet, unassuming man who faithfully served in the White House 34 years and 8 Presidents. The Lord desires us to be faithful in every task given to us.
