The mentality nowadays is, everyone wants something handed to them. There is a strong feeling of entitlement. Now, I aint a platinum selling artist, but I am proud of the fact I did everything on my own. Have I had people try to eat off of my plate and expect stuff for free? Of course. And like anyone else, I got tired of it. I do my own graphics, I write my own material, and when I couldnt find anyone to do beats for me, or ones that really fit me, I learned to do my own. When I couldnt get in the studio, I got the minimal stuff I needed, and (hand to god), recorded myself....in my garage.....in my truck. I been promised everything from radio play to trips to NY that never happened, but I still grind. In spite of the close relationships I lost, I still grind. Thats why when someone DOES do something for me, it shocks me so hard, I sometimes get overly appreciative, because I never expected it. Im use to make others shine, and no one tryin to help mine. I say all that to say this; some people are in this for the wrong reasons. Some people are only in this for the money and not for the love of the culture. Instead of them embracing their love of the culture, and having it be a sincere part of them (like this cat), some people look at it as merely a way to make money. Me personally, even if I did stop I would still make music just for me, or the people who do appreciate what I bring to the table. Why? Because I AM hip-hop. It is my solitude; the place I go when nothing seems to make sense. Some reflect it in rapping, some dance, some DJing - you do it regardless. You do it to escape as well as everything else. Painters are probably the brokest people on the planet, and most of them dont see fame until after they die. Thats the devotion to hip-hop one should have. And if you arent built for that (like this cat here), then you should quit. This isnt for you, and there is no heart in what you create. pigeonsandplanes/2014/06/im-quitting-rap/
