The mess I read in the Post earlier this morning re-ignited my stance on this. I REMEMBER this stuff, man. Dinkins put forth the initiative to beef up police presence on the streets and wanted to pay them more as an incentive to draw in more people to the job in order to reduce crime. DINKINS commissioner reduced the squeegee cats from midtown and the East Side where they were harassing people the most. Crime declined from the year that Dinkins took office. It was the worst under Carey and Koch, and after 1990 (the year that Dinkins officially took office) until Giuliani the Opportunist took office, it declined. But Giuliani got credit for it. Then his posturing after 9/11 was another joke. Look, he busted up part of the mafia, and depending on where you stand on the mob, that was either good, bad, or not worthy of any accolades at all, but all this other grand-standing hes done just makes me sick. That whole Rosenbaum situation in Crown Heights is the only reason Dinkins didnt get re-elected. They didnt want him NOR Lee Brown in position of power, and used Dinkins PROPER STANCE on the riots against him. The Opportunist stepped in and took advantage of the vacuum. Even BRATTON admits this, and he worked under Giuliani when all this stop and frisk BS got credit for reducing crime that was already on its way down BEFORE Bratton even got to New York. The economy was on almost an immediate upswing from the time that Bush left office, and crime had already been declining, but you have Giuliani in 1994 and 1995 acting like (and taking credit for it) he had something to do with it.
