The message of the Christian idea of lent is that self denial is virtuous, so it follows that our lives under austerity, which involve structural rather than ritual self denial, are virtuous too. One promises happiness in the next life, the other promises happiness sometime undisclosed. Both Lent and Austerity were discussed on newstalk breakfast this morning, unfortunately Ivan Yates didnt make the connection. We trust our readers wont be adding ritual self denial to the structural self denial that has been imposed on us. Were all in this together.
