The mighty RAMONES were such an importantly-innovative and pioneering band of my lifetime, that I never quite know where to begin in discussing their monumental legacy. I paid a $2.00 cover charge around 1978 and saw them blow the roof off a near-empty club in Chicago, and then hung out with them in the rat-infested back alley and chatted about music and the Beatles and the abysmal state of rock music, until they all piled into their beater van and headed off to their next show in Ohio. I left that show and that alley, and attempted to explain to all my pothead progressive rock friends that I had just spent an evening with the future of rock music. But they merely laughed me off as they cranked the volume on their YES and EMERSON LAKE & PALMER albums. Well, history has proven me correct. This band was decades before their time, I knew they would have a difficult road, and they did. Now, all of them dead, they have finally been attributed the legendary status that so eluded them during their lifetimes. Before they kicked the doors down for countless bands who would have never stood a chance otherwise, if you werent a schooled musician such as those in the progressive snob bands of the 70s, then you were simply encouraged to get out of the way and keep your day job. The Ramones said, F---k you, we have something in our hearts to say, and it doesnt need an F# augmented minor-diminished chord and an entire album side of two songs to be said with.
