The militarization of our police forces is pretty tragic. I suspect that the Founders wouldnt recognize our cops as they execute warrants. Our leaders who lived through Reconstruction would have to assume, watching cops executing search warrants, that the Posse Comitatus Act had been suspended. Or perhaps the Constitution itself. Our local cops now drive around in up-armored humvees and surplus MRAPs, carry M-4s, wear masks and green fatigues. They look like scary special forces troops. But theyre just local cops executing search warrants for drug sale or possession. Scary. Terrifying. And every once in a while they descend on the wrong house or throw a stun grenade at someone too young or too old to be on the receiving end of such a shock. Tragic. And fixable. Maybe in the future we can save the MRAPs and the flash-bangs for when we really, really need them.
