The mining Janie and I have been doing is not a expensive thing to do on vacation if you do not own the mine and equipment. Lots of mines will let people come in and mine the tailings for a reasonable price. They do this because of the cost of keeping a single track hoe working all day is 500.00 a day in fuel. Our mine in hiddenite works 3 track hoes every day thats 1500.00 a day in fuel. But no one is allowed in this mine but the owners had some problems with people not obeying the rules. But lots of mines across the country do welcome tourist and have locations set aside for hand tool mining. You can and will fine gemstones at these mines once you get the hang of things. Terry owns a mine in Georgia that has the only amethyst that changes colors in sun light the rough sells for 60 dollars a gram. Anyone can mine there just obey the rules. It called Jackson crossroads mine. Google it and get direction. It is in the north east part of Georgia. Great family fun and can pay for your vacation with the stones you fine.
