The mishnah asks, “Who then is wise?” and answers, “one who learns from everyone” (Avot 4:1). Wisdom, then, requires that you make space and take time to listen to others. “The talkative listen to no one, for they are ever speaking. And the first evil that attends those who do not know how to be silent is that they hear nothing” (Plutarch). Therefore Moses said, “If something is too difficult for you, bring it to me and I will listen” (Deut. 1:17). The sages comment that Moses would not pontificate a decision, but would quietly and intently listen – and the solution would be revealed. The same may be said regarding prayer. After youve unburdened your heart of its anxious thoughts - these matters being too difficult for you - then you are made ready to hear God’s voice in your midst....
