The modern world seems to have a knack for making some bad things worse. Cleanliness and relative isolation in childhood appear to be causing an increase in allergy problems; overuse of antibiotics is creating resistant bacteria; and air pollution, indoor heating and cooling and even some topical eye medications are helping to increase the prevalence of dry-eye syndrome. Usually, when an ophthalmologist encounters these conditions, the signs and symptoms are sufficiently different to make identification straightforward. However, that’s not always the case. Here, three experienced ophthalmologists share their advice for identifying and managing these problems when the nature of what you’re dealing with isn’t obvious.
