The ‘mood’ in the country resembles the mood that was in 1996 - TopicsExpress

The ‘mood’ in the country resembles the mood that was in 1996 and I remember experiencing that as a 9 year old. Dr.Manmohan Singh had opened the economy in 1991 and by 1996, due to an increase in demand, India had experienced price rise. Everywhere there was an outcry that liberalization has brought havoc in the country! (I do not remember the economics part as a 9 year old. But as I read about this, I can relate the same now.) Common citizens experienced a sudden price rise – a fact which was not so evident in the Socialist India before 1991. I remember my grandmother telling me, “Never vote for the Congress. They increase the prices.” But I excuse her now as she still feels that shopping worth a thousand rupees is a huge amount! :) I remember all residents in our building assembling in one of the residents’ house and discussing how Congress should not be brought to power. No one discussed how Dr. Singh brought back the mortgaged gold and saved the nation from humiliation – as national pride for us was restricted to (only) winning a war against Pakistan! But everywhere the slogan was, “Liberalization has brought havoc to the country!” But a new nation was emerging! Those policies – though opposed by the leftists and rightists – were the need of the hour and now looking back I realize – they have built India. The subsequent governments – though opposed these policies when they were in opposition – continued with the same in the later years. Here was established the vision of Dr. Manmohan Singh and P.V Narsimha Rao. A vision which no one possessed. Neither the leftists, nor the rightists and also not the Congress leaders who opposed this step. We are now talking about the ‘nirmaan’ of a new India. But what would be India five years later is not established by the party which is claiming that they will change the country! One thing is clear – it would be difficult for the next government to bifurcate the steps taken by the current government. And hence it would be policies of the Congress but government of ‘whoever it is’ that will run the country! :)
