The more time I spend in the subtle planes of meditative consciousness the more I feel a harmful imbalance afoot in the growing national divide. This seems to me to be fueled in a frightening manner by those on the far right of the political spectrum. Not that the far left is free of some responsibility and participation. However, from a humanistic perspective, it is the far right that seems to be participating in or in the grip of an "evil" impulse (an anti humanistic ideology). The great danger is that they self-identify with righteousness and specifically a "Christian" motivation. Yet, a critical reading of the Scriptures presents us with multiple religious perspectives and traditions that are at odds with one another. What we can establish of the "Historical Jesus" identifies with the most humanistic of the traditions of Old and presents us with a "God" who is on the side of humanity and the well-being of all. That is to say, an authentic Christianity is humanistic to the core and is guided by love and care for the poor, the oppressed, the marginalized, those considered to be outsiders, those held by some religious traditions of Ancient Israel to be sinners, unclean, to be despised. A true humanism is not anthropocentric but views all manner of creation as sacred and to be managed with due diligence and respect. Authentic spirituality is humanistic and embodies universal love, care, respect, responsibility, and compassion especially for the most needy and most marginalized members of the society. Evil is present in that which mitigates against such universal love and true action on behalf of the economically and socially oppressed. Love is that which conquers such evil, for love does not judge. Love is gentle. Love is kind. It is by their love that they will be known and by their humility in placing the other before themselves. The world needs meditation grounded in universal love and action grounded in the same.
