The morning report: Gerald slept zero hours last night, but we had - TopicsExpress

The morning report: Gerald slept zero hours last night, but we had the most amazing nurse ever. He watched over Gerald like a hawk, anticipated anything he would need, and did two extra steps beyond that. He was the most proactive caregiver we have had so far. We have had really good care before yesterday, but Chris (our nurse from last night was the definition of excellence- and I plan on making sure he gets recognized for that). I actually got a few hours of sleep. Gerald told me this morning that his nurse spent the night making him leave me alone. When I got up, I helped him bathe and we made two full laps around the unit- which is a HUGE improvement from yesterday. Yesterday he could barely make 1/2 lap before being scarily short of breath. The fluid collecting in his drains is getting a lot lighter in color and the odor is going away. He still feels like crap. He will still tell you he feels like crap, but he is starting to get more pushy about trying to pin the doctors down on some time goals: how many more times am I going to break out in a sweat? Did you see the fluid in my drain? Give me your best guess about when you think I might get out of here. Doctor: You can keep asking, but you arent going to get me to tell you how long you will be here. I will say you arent leaving anytime soon. This is the first day you seem better, but I still have a lot of things I need to see before you go anywhere. So, just relax my friend, and plan on being here for at least 3-4 more days.
