The moss plant reproduces when a water droplet touches the antheridium (male reproductive part) and the archegonium (female reproductive part). The male haploid gamete swims through the water droplet by flapping its flagellum. Once it gets to the archegonium, it enters inside where a female haploid gamete awaits it arrival. The two reproductive cells unite together to form a diploid zygote, a one-celled organism. In the spiritual realm, Jesus, like the male haploid gamete, makes the initiative in the union between divinity and humanity. Christ comes to us with hopes of uniting His life together with ours. If we allow Him to come into our hearts, like the female haploid gamete allows the male haploid gamete to unite together with her, an intimate bond is formed. And what about the water droplet? In the Bible, water is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. So the third person of the Godhead is the One who aids in the special union of man with God. These are some of the lessons I used to share with my students when I taught biology.
