The most common question I get asked about Western Rosellas is - TopicsExpress

The most common question I get asked about Western Rosellas is where can I get some Blue Back Westerns or what do they look like. The first thing is I see very few good ones in the bush and it can be a year or so apart. However we have photographed a couple of fantastic blue birds over the years and over the next few weeks I will post a photo of a good Blue Back. It is the same with Red Backed birds it took me several years to find a really good example. Wild birds can vary greatly in colour, David Attenborough said variation is the building blocks of evolution. It is us the Aviculturist that like uniformity and set colour standards we think our birds should meet. It has taken many years of selective breeding to improve the Red Backed birds to reach the point where they breed fairly true to our expectations. Having said that it is the colour variation in the wild birds that I enjoy photographing. This bird has to much red on the back to be a good Blue Back for Aviculture but what a lovely bird.
