The most interesting part of last nights Budget Committee took place before the meeting. While we were waiting for the meeting to start one of the elected members said that he had never promised anyone how he was going to vote on any issue other than he was going to vote the way he thought best. I told him that I was the oppoisite. I told people exactly where I stood on the issues and that people that disagreed should probably not vote for me. I guess it only matters the first time you run for election because after that you have a voting record that people can hold you accountable against. I do think though that the attitude of the other member is one I disagreee with. I believe it is important to let the voters know where you stand even if it costs you some votes. There is not a single voter in Salem that can ever say that they were very surprised by how I represented them. There may be some vote here or there that surprises people, but in most of those cases I have been able to explain to people why my vote was consistent with my overall views. I think we should as politicians explain where we stand. Maybe then people would have a higher opinion of politicians even if we disagree with them.
